Salaam Namaste is a 2005 Hindi-language Indian film directed by Dibakar Banerjee and scripted by his mentor, Jahnu Barua. It chronicles the journey of two Muslim boys from the northern Indian city of Lucknow who move to New York City and struggle with identity, education, love, work and culture shock. The movie won several awards including the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in English for 2006 The movie has gained immense popularity amongst teens due to its storyline which speaks about real life situations faced by many young Muslims in America today. The critic concluded that it's an "outstanding film that makes you laugh, cry and think". Anupama Chopra of NDTV gave the film 4/5 saying "Like all good debut films, Salaam Namaste is made of moments so sharp they almost draw blood." She particularly praised the movie for its dialogue and performances. On the other hand, Derek Elley of "Variety" opined that "Salaam Namaste' is slickly made but disappointingly slight, lacking in character or conflict."
The film had four hit songs composed by Anu Malik. Three songs were featured in the album while one song ("Aankhiyaan") was released on the internet only after recording it with Alka Yagnik. The soundtrack was released on 21 September 2005. It contains six tracks, written and composed by Anu Malik himself.
